Mohun Bagan look for fresh beginning

Shillong: After a frustrating Federation Cup campaign, McDowell Mohun Bagan are looking to start afresh as they prepare to face Lajong FC in the opening match of the I-League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex on Saturday.

Bagan had made an early exit in the quarter final league stages of Federation Cup. Injuries and illness to players like Tolgay Ozebe, Syed Rahim Nabi, C.S. Sabeeth and Mehrajuddin Wadoo also did not also help their cause.

However, to the delight of the Bagan fans, most of the players have recovered from their respective injuries and are raring to go against Lajong.

Speaking after the practice session on Friday, coach Santosh Kashyap said, “It was unfortunate that we missed some of our players in the Federation Cup due to injuries and illness. But they have recovered. We are confident of doing well in tomorrow’s match.”

In other matches, defending champions Dempo SC will be looking to garner full points when they face Churchill Brothers at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda and United Sikkim FC take on Salgaocar SC at the Paljor Stadium.

Dempo, who had suffered a heart-breaking loss to East Bengal in the Federation Cup final last Sunday, are keen to go all the way in the I-League.

Dempo will rely on former Arsenal and Tottenham Hostspur striker Rohan Ricketts.
