Guruji promises support to UPA

Bokaro, Oct. 5: JMM chief Shibu Soren today said that his party would continue to support the UPA government, casting aside threats of backing out of the coalition following the Centre’s move to allow FDI in retail last month.

Speaking to The Telegraph at his Bokaro residence, Soren threw his weight behind the Manmohan Singh government, regardless of whether the JMM’s ally and Congress’s bitter rival BJP disapproves of it.

“My party had only recently supported the UPA presidential candidate, Pranab Mukherjee. I still feel that Manmohan Singh is doing his best for the development of the country,” Soren clarified.

Asked about the JMM response to Mamata Banerjee’s bid to move a no-confidence motion against the Centre, Guruji said he would not support the Trinamul Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister.

He characteristically added that no one could dictate terms to him on who to vote for.

The JMM supremo, however, objected to the Centre’s decision to limit subsidised domestic gas cylinders to households to six annually.

Soren said that at least nine LPG cylinders must be issued on subsidised rates, adding that he would raise the matter with chief minister Arjun Munda.

Replying to another query, he said that JMM would contest all the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the event of a mid-term poll.

But he opined that such a situation would not arise, hoping the UPA government would complete its term.
