New 7 in eves’ team

- State women’s outfit eyes turnaround

The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) on Friday infused fresh blood in its women’s team, naming as many as seven new players in a 15-member squad that will take part in the east zone Inter-State One Day Championship League matches in Ranchi.

The nine-day tournament will kick off from October 9.

The new players — Ritu Rani, Kanchan Singh (both Ranchi), Devyani Prasad (Jamshedpur), Usha Verma (Koderma), Ragini Kumari Bharti (Simdega), Shalini Kumari (Bokaro) and Shalu Singh (Deoghar) — have been included in the state colt’s outfit for the first time.

The team, which left for Ranchi by road on Friday, will be led by all-rounder Monika Murmu of Jamshedpur.

The others who made the cut included Shivani Kandeyang, Abhisarika Srivastava, Gayatri Bhumij (all Jamshedpur), Anjana Basant, Pooja Kumari (Bokaro), Priyanka Sawaiyan (West Singhbhum) and former captain Nilam Yadav (Dhanbad).

“All the new players who have been named in the squad have shown promise. We have high hopes from them and expect them to fare well in Ranchi,” a JSCA functionary said.

The team will be accompanied by Bal Shankar Jha and veteran cricketer Charanjeet Kaur, who have been named as coach and manager, respectively, for the outing. Surendra Sharma will accompany the outfit as trainer while Supriya Agarwal has been appointed as the physio.

Hosts Jharkhand are scheduled to take on Tripura on the inaugural day of the tourney before facing Assam on October 11. The home side will then lock horns with Odisha on October 13, then square off against Bengal on October 15.

The state women’s team, which failed to win a single match last season, will be hoping for a better performance this year with the new faces.

On their part, the girls will be eager to put in their best as their performance in the one-dayers may give them a place in the team for Twenty20 Inter-state Championship League matches (east zone).

The T20 matches are scheduled to be played in Dhanbad from December 15 to 19. JSCA secretary Ashim Kumar Singh said as always they had tried to select the best squad.

“We expect the team to come good, this time,” he said.
