Award for city dancers

City-based dancers Tanusree Shankar and Priti Patel are among the 36 artistes who will receive the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for 2011 at a ceremony in New Delhi on October 9.

“It’s the most important recognition for the form and our work and what every serious dancer in the country aims for,” said Patel. Shankar, selected for her work for creative and experimental dance, said: “I am overwhelmed because it was unexpected. The first person I thought of was Ananda [Shankar] because he would have been very happy.”

Power supply: Power supply to VIP Road, Narkeldanga Main Road, Shiv Krishna Daw Lane, Motilal Basak Garden Lane, Ramkrishna Samadhi Road, Yogadyan Lane, Maniktala, Subhas Sarobar and Beleghata may be disrupted between 11am and 1pm on Friday because of maintenance.

Cancer patient: New Town police station had a new officer-in-charge for a few hours on Thursday — seven-year-old Suraj Binbanshi (picture left). Suraj, a terminally ill cancer patient, wants to be a cop, and officers of the Bidhannagar commissionerate granted him his wish. He was given a uniform and toy guns, said Santosh Nimbalkar, the deputy commissioner of police (airport division).
