Trash job strike threat

Around 3,500 workers of Patna Municipal Corporation have threatened to go on a three-day strike next week in protest against its decision to hand over the garbage collection work to Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCo).

The workers affiliated to Patna Municipal Corporation Staff Union staged a dharna at PMC’s Maurya Lok office on Thursday. They will go on the strike from Tuesday.

Garbage collection and management will be handed over to Bihar Urban Services Corporation Ltd, a special purpose vehicle of BUIDCo.

“The decision will adversely affect the service conditions of the workers. Why were the workers not consulted before such a decision? What would happen to them?” asked union president Chandra Prakash Singh.

PMC officers are, however, hopeful that the strike would be called off. “We are certain the strike will be called off after talks with the union,” additional municipal commissioner Chandrma Singh.
