Three criminals allegedly involved in looting Rs 70 lakh from the Hajipur branch of State Bank of India were arrested on Thursday.
The robbery occurred on July 24. The police also recovered Rs 2.15 lakh from the arrested men and seized a truck, a hatchback, two motorbikes and five cellphones from them.
Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar said: “A Special Task Force team, constituted to trap the criminals, arrested the trio — Pankaj Thakur, Ayub Ali Ansari and Prem Prakash — from Ramdayalu Nagar in the town. Residents of Muzaffarpur and Vaishali, the trio were planning to loot another bank in the district.”
In the course of interrogation, the arrested men revealed to the police the names of other gang members — Manoj Singh, Rahul, Rahul Kumar, Kalam Ansari and Laddu Rai. All of them are residents of Muzaffarpur or Vaishali.
“The district police, along with their Vaishali counterparts, have launched a manhunt to arrest the others,” said SSP Rajesh.
“Pankaj Thakur, the kingpin, got around Rs 20 lakh as share of the loot. He used the money to purchase a truck and a car. As a result, we were able to track him down.”
The SBI officials met SSP Rajesh and requested him to recover the robbed money by confiscating the property of the robbers.
“The numbers on the recovered currency matched with the records of the bank,” Rajesh said.
The criminals were produced in court and forwarded to Khudiram Bose Central Jail in Muzaffarpur.
