Classes give over for Mukul rally

Burdwan, Oct. 4: A school in Burdwan was closed after recess today as a Trinamul meeting addressed by Mukul Roy was held on the compound.

Students of Galsi High School said classes were disrupted since morning because of blaring loudspeakers as local Trinamul leaders addressed people, who had started arriving since 7am.

Headmaster Subal Chandra Mahato, who shared the dais with all-India Trinamul general secretary Roy, said he had not violated any rule by asking the students to go home after recess.

“The school managing committee had given the green signal to hold the meeting on the premises following a request by the Trinamul block president,” Mahato said.

“The school remains closed anyway on the 3rd or 4th of each month as salaries are disbursed to teachers,” he claimed. Local Trinamul leaders echoed Mahato.

No student, however, could recall classes being suspended on such days.

“The authorities told us only yesterday that the school would give over after recess,” a Class XI boy said.

Addressing the crowd of 6,000, Roy said “the Centre has no right to sell the country”. “We will oppose FDI at any cost.”
