‘We can’t blame the conditions’

Colombo: AB de Villiers said he was disappointed by South Africa’s disastrous showing in the Super Eights of the World T20 and vowed to make amends.

“We didn’t play well enough… We can’t blame it on the conditions. We lost to Pakistan from a good position… We played poor cricket and its really disappointing,” the South African captain said.

De Villiers said he was expected India to go in with two spinners. “I expected another specialist spinner to play for India…”

How important was Gary Kirsten in planning their strategy against India? “Gary is a great coach. It’s great to have him. He has got great success when working with India. He helped us as much as he could… Its been the same in other matches as well. But we couldn’t perform. We weren’t good enough on the day,” he said.

“There are no excuses. We were found wanting in the crucial moments.”
