Prisoner on fast

Durgapur, Oct. 2: A youth arrested in connection with the murder of a Class II girl in Asansol has been sitting on a hunger strike since last evening alleging wrongful confinement.

Sukanta Sarkar alias Rawan was arrested on August 8 on the charges of possessing illegal arms, the day the body of the seven-year-old girl was recovered from a drain about 400m from her school in Burnpur.

Police had claimed to have made some headway in the case after interrogating Sukanta. They had said Sukanta had killed the girl to seek revenge on her parents who along with others had driven him out of their locality.

The girl’s father had rejected the police’s claims.

The subdivisional officer of Asansol, S.G. Suraiya said she had sent a medical team to check his health. “As of now, his condition is normal. We are keeping watch on him,” the officer said.
