Recce to airlift Pobitora rhino

Guwahati, Oct. 1: The state forest department is examining various places where the rhino, which had strayed from Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in Morigaon district to Sualkuchi in Kamrup district, should be airlifted.

The rhino, spotted by locals at Rani Chapori of Sualkuchi in Kamrup district yesterday, had strayed from Pobitora wildlife sanctuary after being swept away by floodwaters.

The IAF today carried out a reconnaissance. “We are examining various destinations where the rhino can be sent,” forest minister Rakibul Hussain told The Telegraph.

Sources said Manas was the place where the rhino was to be airlifted but no final decision has been taken till now as experts are examining different options.

Hussain will visit the place tomorrow where the rhino has been spotted.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) officials today visited the place and examined the aircraft, which will carry the rhino. “There is a lot of water nearby and tranquillising it is will be difficult. The health of the rhino will have to be thoroughly examined before it is sent,” a source said.

Administration and police officials are at the spot.
