Burdwan, Oct. 1: At least nine mourners returning from a funeral were crushed to death after falling off an overloaded lorry that tilted on its back and toppled over on an elevated approach to a bridge in Burdwan.
Around 80 people were returning to Hooghly after the cremation in Jamalpur when the accident happened around 10.30pm on the approach to the bridge over a canal fed by the Damodar.
At least 35 people suffered injuries. The dead and the injured were put on 10 lorries and taken to Burdwan Medical College Hospital, 35km away.
A police officer said the lorry toppled over and slid down the slope of the bridge, crushing the victims.
