Burdwan/ Chinsurah, Sept. 30: Seven pilgrims from Bihar were killed and at least 40 others injured when the bus they were travelling in fell in a ditch along NH2 at Gurap in Hooghly district early today.
Police said the bus was on its way to Kalighat from Vaishali in Bihar after a halt at Tarapith in Birbhum district yesterday. The accident took place around 2.30am.
“It is presumed that the driver fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle. The driver and the cleaner have fled. Seven persons died on the way to the Burdwan Medical College Hospital,” the superintendent of police, S.M.H. Meerza said.
A doctor at the hospital said 11 persons were admitted with critical injuries and they were “now stable” and nine had been released after first-aid.
The bus had 55 pilgrims. They had set out from Ranipokhor in Vaishali on September 25 night.
