Cop alleges irregularities

Shillong, Sept. 29: Meghalaya director-general (prisons) Kulbir Krishan today asserted that the Fullmoon Dhar episode could have been repeated in Shillong district jail had he not unearthed glaring irregularities in the right time.

He was referring to the alleged undue favours being given to Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion R. Sangma, an undertrial prisoner, inside the jail premises.

Since August 26, Champion has been lodged in the high security ward of the jail.

“After jailor James Marbaniang was transferred to Williamnagar for financial irregularities, another jailor, Felicita Wahlang, was brought in his place.

She joined on August 3,” Krishan told reporters at his official residence.

According to Krishan, Champion’s lawyer Sujit Dey had paid a lot of money to Wahlang.

“The money was used to buy new clothes and also cigarettes for him (Champion),” he alleged.

Moreover, Krishan said on September 5, when an undertrial prisoner was produced in court, the prisoner informed the court that Champion was willing to pay Rs 5,000 to his advocate to get him bail.

On September 6, when Krishan visited the jail premises, he observed that one undertrial prisoner, who was Champion’s cell mate, was wearing new clothes and shoes.

“It was revealed that two shirts, two trousers and a pair of shoes were purchased with the money supplied by Champion’s lawyer to Wahlang,” Krishan said.

Wahlang was subsequently moved to Tura on September 12 on temporary duty.
