UNLF claims hand in blasts

Imphal, Sept. 29: The United National Liberation Front today claimed responsibility for yesterday’s bomb attack on an Assam Rifles patrol party along the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district.

The outfit exploded at least five IEDs along Kwatha village road in Chandel district, killing two jawans and injuring four others.

One civilian was also killed while two women were hurt in the incident.

In a statement today, senior publicity officer of the outfit, Ksh. Yoiheiba said that a team of Manipur Peoples Army mobile battalion had carried out the attack. The Manipur Peoples Army is the military wing of UNLF.

The statement expressed sorrow for the death of a civilian and said the outfit shared the grief of the bereaved family.

The attack occurred even as UNLF chairman R.K. Meghen alias Sana Yaima and secretary Nongyai were appearing in an NIA court in Guwahati yesterday afternoon.

Sana Yaima was arrested two years ago from Bangladesh and since then has been lodged in Guwahati central jail.

Villagers of Kwatha today staged a sit-in to protest yesterday’s bomb blasts.

Police arrested two cadres of People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive) during a search operation at Singjamei Waikhom Leikai in Imphal West yesterday.

The police recovered five bombs from the arrested duo who were travelling on scooters.

The police said the cadres were planning to attack security forces and had bought the explosives from Moreh a few days back.
