Ranchi, Sept. 29: A contractor was shot at in broad daylight in the capital today, with the police citing “professional rivalry” as a possible motive behind the attack.
Sayed Javed Waquar (46) was on his way to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation office at Kutchery Chowk from his Simar Toli residence on his bike, when he was fired upon by two motorcycle-borne men near Hot Lips restaurant on Kanke Road around 11.45am.
“The attackers rode up to him on their bike and fired at him from the back. Though injured, Waquar managed to stop his bike near the restaurant to call his relatives, who rushed to the spot and took him to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences. If he had fallen from his bike, the shooters would have killed him on the spot,” said a friend of the contractor, requesting anonymity.
Waquar was able to speak while he was being wheeled into the operation theatre at RIMS. He said he suspected the involvement of a Central Public Works Department (CPWD) official and two rival contractors in the incident.
“I had won a bid to construct the boundary wall around CIP-Kanke, and a building on the premises. This irritated some CPWD officials who manipulated tenders and the contractors who benefited from the practice. I think they were trying to settle scores with me,” he was heard telling the police.
He also named three suspects — Pawan Kumar, a resident of Millat Colony, and Bobby, a resident of Kanke Block Chowk, besides an assistant engineer posted at the CPWD office behind Indira Palace in Hinoo.
Senior superintendent of police Saket Kumar Singh said prima facie it appeared to be case of professional rivalry, but other angles could not be ruled out. “I have sought a thorough probe. Efforts are on to arrest the shooters,” he said.
A doctor attending to the injured contractor said a bullet was lodged near the spinal cord and efforts were on to remove it.
A case of attempt to murder was registered at Kanke police station.
