Calcutta, Sept. 29: The state Congress will organise a public meeting at the Hazra crossing, a stone’s throw from Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat home, on Monday in support of FDI in multi-brand retail and other recent central policies, the date coinciding with the chief minister’s dharna in Delhi against these issues.
“We will organise the meeting in support of the Centre’s pro-people policies. We will tell the people that the chief minister is misleading them,” state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya said.
Congress workers from across Calcutta and the districts will assemble in front of the MP Birla Planetarium, from where they will march to the meeting venue.
Burrabazar district Congress president Santosh Pathak, one of the organisers of the meeting, said the party would “use the event as the launch pad for a sustained agitation against the state government’s anti-people policies”.
Mamata’s Jantar Mantar dharna will be held to protest against FDI in multi-brand retail, the diesel price hike and the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders. She did not take questions from reporters before leaving Writers’ today.
Most of the 28 Trinamul MPs will leave for Delhi tomorrow morning. State Trinamul president and MP Subrata Bakshi said he would skip the dharna because of his “engagements in Calcutta”.
Former junior Union minister Sultan Ahmed said: “Members of like-minded parties are expected to join our dharna.” Trinamul leaders from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are expected to attend the dharna.
