New Delhi: Fifa panel referee Armughan Rowan was severely beaten up by one of the footballers of the Steqlal High School, Afghanistan, during the Subroto Cup school football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium.
A profusely bleeding Rowan had to be taken to a local hospital. He needed six stitches on his upper lip before being released.
As Rowan was in no position to continue, assistant referee CR Singha supervised the last few minutes of the outing.
The visiting Afghan school, who lost the quarter final match 0-2 against Ukraine’s FC Dynamo Kyiv, was upset after one of the players was given marching orders by the referee a few minutes before the final whistle. One of the footballers, Shejauddin, attacked Rowan and started beating him.
Rowan is one of India’s best referees and is tipped to be included in the AFC Elite Panel soon.
Asked whether any action would be taken against the erring player, the AIFF head of referees, Gautam Kar said: “Subroto Cup is not affiliated to AIFF…But if a report comes to us officially, we will take necessary steps.”
A member of the organising committee said: “The referee’s report is awaited. Based on that, we will take appropriate action.”
