Govt official convicted after 20 yrs

Shillong, Sept. 28: Twenty years after a corruption case was registered, two persons, one of them a former senior accountant of the accountant general office, were convicted by a special court.

B. Giri, special judge, Shillong, through her judgment on September 20 and order on September 25, convicted Jaharlal Das, the then senior accountant of the accountant general office, Shillong, and Dhiresh Kumar Chakraborty, the then director/chairman of M/S Tricon Wood Products (P) Ltd, Thana Road, Shillong.

The conviction was in relation to a CBI case registered on June 30, 1992.

According to a special communique, undue favour was allegedly shown to the directors of M/S Tricon Wood Products Ltd by some officials of Punjab National Bank in sanctioning of loans and advances.

It was further alleged that the sanctioning of loans and advances to the firm was on the basis of forged documents, and in violation of banking norms. This led to a misappropriation of Rs 30.9 lakh.

In a similar case, a special CBI court, in 2010, had convicted five persons, including V.K. Rangacharyulu, the then assistant general manager of Punjab National Bank, and sentenced them to two-year jail in a Rs 69.75 lakh loan scam for the setting up of a three-star hotel here in 1988.

Das was accused of facilitating the sanction of the loan.
