The Bokaro police brass has drawn up a list of measures to ensure a safe and peaceful Durga Puja in the district.
With the mega festival about three weeks away, Bokaro superintendent of police (SP) Kuldeep Dwivedi conducted a high-level meeting with police officers last week, where dos and don’ts were marked out for the puja organisers.
At the meeting, the SP sought details about the places and the famous pandals that drew the maximum number of people. He was apprised of the huge turnout at Vaishali More of Sector IX, sectors II, III, IV and XII (all in Bokaro steel city), Chas checkpost, Chandrapura main market, Bermo township and Bokaro thermal township after which he instructed his men to take proper measures to prevent any emergency.
It was decided that all 16 major puja committees of Bokaro steel city, Chas, Bermo, Chandrapura, Bokaro thermal and other places would have to install a minimum of three CCTVs at puja pandals along with fire extinguishers. Besides, puja committee members ought to be trained in handling the fire extinguishers.
The officers in charge were told to get in touch with the puja committees and inform them about the measures they needed to take for a safe puja.
“The CCTVs should be installed at the entrance, the main centre of the puja mandap where people gather for worshipping the goddess and the parking lot. These steps will not only beef up security and help us man the crowd better, quick action can also be taken in case of emergencies. Moreover, we can keep an eye on mischief-makers and eve-teasers,” the SP told The Telegraph.
He added that the puja committees had been asked to install fire extinguishers on the pandal premises as thousands of lights were used for décor and chances of a blaze could not be ruled out. “It’s not going to cost much. As it is, the committees splurge on the idol, pandal and decorations. I am sure spending a few extra bucks on CCTVs and fire extinguishers will not hurt them much,” Dwivedi said.
