Encephalitis in Darjeeling

Darjeeling, Sept. 26: Plantersí Hospital here has said that one of its patientís has been diagnosed with herpes simplex meningo-encephalitis and four others were admitted with similar symptoms.

Vivek Sundas, the 20-year-old who got his tests done from a private lab in Delhi, is a resident of Singtom, from where another patient also hails.

The doctors suspect that the death of 75-year-old I.B Lama in the hospital from Dooteriya tea garden was also from the same infection.

The symptoms include headache, fever, stiffness of neck, sensitivity to light, personality changes, unusual behaviour and unconsciousness.

Plaban Das, the chief medical officer of Plantersí Hospital, said: ďIn less than a fortnight, five patients were admitted to the hospital and the symptoms suggest that all of them are infected with the herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2.Ē
