Child ‘raped’ by village youth

Balurghat, Sept. 26: A six-year-old girl from a village in Tapan was allegedly raped by a youth from the same locality last night.

The girl’s family lodged a complaint with Tapan police today and the child is under treatment at the Balurghat district hospital. The accused has fled.

Sources said yesterday around 8pm, a youth aged around 19 years entered the girl’s house and allegedly raped her.

The child, a Class I student, was alone in the house at that time as her parents had gone to a neighbour’s place.

When the girl’s parents returned half-an-hour later, they found her on the floor, groaning in pain.

She was taken to the Tapan block hospital and later shifted to the district hospital in Balurghat.

“We had gone to a neighbour’s house and our daughter was studying in the house. When we returned, we found our child groaning. She told me everything. She also named the youth who had committed the crime,” said the father. “I want harsh punishment for the accused.”

Today the girl’s father lodged a police complaint against the youth, a Class XII student.

Local women under the banner of the RSP blocked the Balurghat-Gangarampur road at Chaurasta in Tapan for almost an hour today demanding the arrest of the accused. The protesters alleged that the accused was the son of a local Trinamul leader.

“We have started a case on the basis of the complaint and we have raided the youth’s house. But the accused has fled. He will be arrested soon,” said Prasun Bhattyacharya, the police superintendent of the district.
