SDO submits stampede report

Dumka, Sept. 26: Deoghar subdivisional officer (civil) Uma Shankar Singh today submitted a magisterial inquiry report on the Monday morning stampede at an ashram which left nine dead and 50 injured.

Singh said he had submitted the report to deputy commissioner Rahul Purwar, but gave no details.

Sources, however, confirmed that the inquiry report pointed out instances of gross negligence on the part of the Satsang Ashram management. Not only were arrangements inadequate to cope with the huge crowd of devotees who had gathered to participate in the 125th birth anniversary of Sri Sri Anukul Chandra Thakur, the management’s reaction after the stampede also left a lot to be desired.

“There is sufficient evidence to book functionaries of the ashram who tried their level best to suppress the matter at the cost of precious lives. Some of the deceased could have been saved had the administration been alerted earlier,” a district official involved in the inquiry told The Telegraph requesting anonymity.

A three-hour delay in informing the district administration was enough to put the role of the ashram management under the scanner, he added.
