Calcutta has finally got an institute dedicated to teaching the art of going clickety-click. The International Institute of Photography (IIP), situated on the first floor of JDS Building in Block EP, Sector V, Salt Lake, is the brainchild of photographer Sanat Ghosh and has brought in big names from the industry, like Dabboo Ratnani and Subi Samuel, as mentors.
The institute, which begins classes in October, offers three modules — a full-time 18-month course, a full-time 10-month fashion photography course and a part-time weekend course of 10 months. The fashion photography course seems to have the maximum number of takers. “I plan to pursue a career in advertising or fashion photography, so I decided to enroll for this course,” said Sayali Das, a second-year student of media science at the Indian School of Business Management.
Ahead of a formal unveiling, IIP organised an adda with its honorary chief mentor, actor Prosenjit, last Friday. The Tollywood star took questions from the students and shared glimpses of his intimate association with the camera.
Prosenjit spoke about the growth of the media industry and how it was the right time to get trained for such jobs. “I’m not here as a teacher. Big names are already a part of the institute. I’m here to share my experiences. Over the years, I have seen the camera in a lot of ways — during photo shoots, ads or cinema shoots. There are certain equations between the cameraman and the model. You need to know about that and I’m here to give you my insights on that,” said the Autograph star. He also stressed that youngsters should not be deterred by the risks involved in a career in photography or photojournalism.
“Our aim is not just to teach photography but also to help students develop an overall aesthetic sense,” said Souvik Guha, the CEO of IIP.
“Having Prosenjit as a mentor will be a huge advantage for the students since he can give them hands-on tips on how to work with celebrities too,” said Sanat Ghosh.
