Kokrajhar, Sept. 25: A mass convention of indigenous organisations will be held at Guwahati District Library on October 5 where a coordination committee of the Indigenous Tribal People’s Organization will be announced.
The decision was taken at a joint sitting of the convening committee of all the national indigenous organisations today at R.N. Brahma Bhawan in Kokrajhar.
The president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha and chairman of the convening committee, Kameswar Brahma, chaired the meeting.
The meeting also announced a mass rally at Amingaon on October 14 and a demonstration in New Delhi on the first day of the winter session of Parliament on issues related to illegal immigrants and illegal encroachment on indigenous belts and blocks.
The indigenous communities in the state resolved to join hands on the issue of illegal migrants and encroachment.
The decision of formation of the coordination committee came up during a special convention of all indigenous non-political organisations held recently in Guwahati on the situation in the BTAD and neighbouring districts.
The organisations felt the need of a coordination committee comprising all the indigenous people and a common platform to voice the plight of the indigenous communities.
The indigenous people who are the earliest settlers in this part of the country have demanded eviction of illegal encroachers from indigenous belts and their protection by implementing Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act, 1886.
The committee said they are expecting a gathering of over 25,000 people approximately during the mass rally at Amingaon in Guwahati.
They also stressed the need to screen the credentials of the displaced people according to Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulations Act, 1886 and the provisions of Section 3(2)(c) of the Foreigners Act, 1946.
According to the acts, no illegal immigrants and unauthorised outsiders can take advantage of the rehabilitation process in the BTAD region.
The committee said they are expecting a gathering of over 25,000 people approximately during the mass rally at Amingaon in Guwahati.
