Youth dies as device explodes

Nagaon, Sept. 25: The blast of a timer device sparked tension in Dima Hasao district’s industrial town Umrangso (Umrangsu), which has been free of any major law and order problem in the past two years.

According to Umrangsu police, a tribal youth was travelling on foot with an explosive device in hand through a residential area, 3km from Umrangsu town around 12.30am.

“The device exploded and the youth died on the spot,” said an Umrangsu police source.

Dima Hasao district superintendent of police M.J. Mahanta said the body of the youth carrying the device was completely mutilated and almost unidentifiable.

“His head fell at least 100 metres away from the site and his hands were found about 200 metres away. An investigation is on to identify the boy,” Mahanta said.

After the Jewel Gorlosa-led faction of DHD laid down arms and majority of cadres of newly floated Dimasa National Revolutionary Front (DNRF) were arrested, there was peace in the district after decades of turbulence.

According to an intelligence source, militants from Nagaland and Manipur became active in Dima Hasao a couple of months back but necessary steps were taken to nip the trouble in the bud.

“We do not think that the boy killed last night was a cadre of any NSCN faction or any other outfit. However, an investigation might bring more facts to light,” Mahanta said.
