Nupur free, witness dies in accident

New Delhi, Sept. 25: An officer who investigated Aarushi Talwar’s 2008 murder died today of injuries suffered in an accident, the latest twist in the case coming on the same day the Noida teen’s jailed mother walked free on bail.

Jagbir Singh Malik, who was an investigating officer in the case for a brief period, was among three policemen run over by a speeding truck on September 20 during riots in Masuri, Ghaziabad.

“Jagbir and the others were rushed to hospital where Jagbir succumbed to his injuries today,” a police official said.

A CBI spokesperson said: “There is no foul play as he died in an accident. He was part of the police deployment in the wake of riots in the area. He was not a listed witness and his death will not have any bearing on the case.”

Nupur Talwar, who was sent to jail in May by a Ghaziabad court, was released on bail tonight. She and her husband Rajesh, both dentists, are accused of murdering Aarushi at their Noida home, where the 15-year-old was found dead on the intervening night of May 15 and 16, 2008.

The initial suspicion had fallen on Hemraj, their missing domestic help. Hemraj’s body was found on the terrace the next day.
