Salgaocar advance

Jamshedpur: Salgaocar beat Pune FC on Monday in a crucial match to romp into the semi-final of the 34th Federation Cup.

The Goa outfit topped Group D with 9 points in three matches to join Dempo in the last four stage. The latter finished their league engagement with 7 points with a 2-1 win over Lajong on Sunday.

Luciano Sabrosa fetched an early lead for Salgaocar by heading in a corner from left under sunny conditions at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. Salgaocar, who just needed a draw for a slot in the semis, played positive football from the outset.

Pune came up with attacking tactics in the must-win match for them. It did not take much time for them to score the equaliser in the 12th minute. Douhou Pierre latched on to a cross from left flank before dodging Salgaocar defender to put the ball in the back of the net.

The match was evenly contested as both sides looked for scoring opportunities on a comparatively dry surface. Salgaocar defended the onslaught commendably.
