Siliguri/Jaigaon, Sept. 24: The Coronation Bridge was reopened to heavy vehicles after nine months following repairs, which means trucks weighing between 10 tonnes and 16 tonnes can cross it.
In December, when a crack appeared in the bridge, PWD officials stopped vehicles weighing more than 10 tonnes from crossing it.
“We issued a notification on September 22 and have passed the information to all officials of the administration concerned. It has been mentioned that vehicles having gross load (vehicle plus goods’ load) up to 16 metric tonnes can cross the Coronation Bridge,” said Nirmal Mondal, the executive engineer of the state PWD (NH-IX division).
“We welcome the decision as our members could not dispatch tea manufactured in the Dooars gardens to Siliguri and Calcutta on time,” Amitangshu Chakraborty, the convener of the Bengal state committee of Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations said.
