|MM on: Neon green lehnga from Halkat jawani
Sexy blouse with sheer back and sleeves, knotted at the back, offset with hot pink bangles. “This combo has really hit a note with everyone. People are talking about it. I think it’s worked because of the young and cool colour contrast.”
95 outfits. 148 minutes. so, a change every 2 minutes and less. Phew! t2 Lessons learnt from a, er, hectic film...
Lesson learnt #1
Don’t bother with the popcorn if you are doing the style review of a film. Not when you already know that the heroine of the film Heroine has close to 100 costumes. Hands-free is not a luxury you can experience, not for a moment of those 148 minutes. The BB will keep you more than busy. You can deal with the thumberry (thumb pain caused due to excessive typing on BlackBerry) later.
MM on: Silver embellished dress for shoot of film within film
No plunging neckline, just a rising hemline. And then she turns around. Whoa! [Sadly, we don’t have a picture to show you the backless back.] “I picked up this dress from a store but a lot of work went into it. It was reconstructed completely. We added the waistband, cut out the back and the dress you see on screen was born.”
Lesson learnt #2
Heroines are not the only ones who have a blink-and-miss appearance. Outfits do too. Sometimes the clothes came, and went, so fast that it was impossible to keep count/track/pace. Groan!
Lesson learnt #3
For sympathy points, ditch the waterproof mascara. Kareena aka Mahi Arora was perfectly made up all the time. And for those emotionally torn scenes, waterproof mascara was swapped for non-waterproof. Those black streaks mixed with tears. So effective! And such a great sad look.
Lesson learnt #4
Black is everyone’s BFF. If you are Size Zero. Size One. Size 21. Mahi lives in black, pretty much. Black sari to shoot glamorous song. Black shirt to lounge around with mom. Black tee for gym. Black jumpsuit to land new boyfriend at a party. Black teddy to seduce the new boyfriend. And so on and so forth.
Lesson learnt #5
Manicures change, while clothes don’t. In the big pre-climax scene, on the eve of her solo release Annie, Mahi is too distraught to change her outfit (black vest, black palazzos). But her manicure changes so swiftly. French to fuchsia — if you must know!
|MM on: Black chiffon sari from Main heroine hoon
Sheer chiffon sari. Sequinned bikini blouse. Silver waist chain. An
ultimate ‘heroine’ moment. “This sari was made in one night. I suggested we do a black sari for the song and Remo (D’Souza), the choreographer, loved the idea. The challenge was to make a black sari look different. The blouse had sequins and a neon pink edging, very sporty-met-glamour, and mixing the different mindsets clicked.”
Lesson learnt #6
Ray-Bans and the stars are inseparable. Indoors or outdoors, especially airports and flights. You just got to have a pair on. Ditto for astrological gemstones.
Lesson learnt #7
Heroines don’t repeat clothes. Ever. Not their nightsuits. Not even when they visit their shrink.
Lesson learnt #8
Kareena is a real chameleon. Totally convincing as Mahi Arora (what’s not to be). Equally good at playing the role of call girl in the film within the film, Tarannum Jaan. From smokey eyes and nude lips to glitter eye shadow and tacky rani pink lips — what a makeover!
Lesson learnt #9
Arjun Rampal (Aryan) is HOT. And so is Randeep Hooda (Angad). So basically, hot attracts hot. Or whatevs!

MM on: Black vest and black palazzos
She wore this outfit through some of the biggest scenes in the movie. Fitted on top,
billowing at the bottom, the silhouette was so effortlessly chic. “We wanted to keep the
silhouette relaxed and we chose black because the idea was to show that there were no colours left in her life. The outfit had to reflect the fact that she is not bothered about what she is wearing and that came across well.”
MM on: Pucci printed dress on the yacht
Summery, sexy and so resorty, this one stood out as the Mahi-Angad romance soared. “I bought this dress in London. It’s a signature Pucci print and it has red and pink, both my favourite colours. She has worn so many dresses by Valentino and Armani so I thought a fun Pucci print would be nice.”
