Phone snatched from lady

Two bike-borne youths snatched the cellphone of a young woman walking down Russel Street on Sunday evening.

This was the fourth reported instance of snatching in the city since Friday and police are as clueless about the perpetrators as they are about those behind the other three, which had occurred in the Jadavpur-Dhakuria area.

Ritwika Nathani was talking to her friend on her new cell phone, worth Rs 9,500, while walking down the road when the duo snatched it. They fled before the woman, in her 30s, could raise an alarm.

“The incident took place around 6.30pm on Sunday. The woman from Chhattisgarh was on her way to a friend’s house. The snatchers must have targetted her after noticing that she was busy negotiating traffic and talking over the phone simultaneously,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner, detective department.

On Saturday morning, three youths on a motorcycle had snatched a gold chain from a woman in Dhakuria and fired four bullets to scare her when she tried to catch them. A homemaker at Survey Park was robbed 15 minutes later, possibly by the same trio.

On Friday morning, snatchers had sped away with a gold chain snatched from a woman in Jadavpur’s Central Park. They shot at a witness who tried to catch them. “We are yet to arrest the snatchers or establish their identities,” said an officer.
