Former rebel nabbed

Hazaribagh, Sept. 23: Former Maoist area commander Praveel Ganjhu was arrested on a tip off from Sikidiri area of Ranchi yesterday. Wanted in several cases lodged in Hazaribagh and Chatra, Praveel carried a reward of Rs 30,000 on his head.

Superintendent of police Manoj Kaushik said that arrest was made with the co-operation of Ranchi police, adding that the number of cases pending against the former rebel was expected to increase on verification.

Praveel (36) joined the CPI (Maoist) in 2006. A native of Bendi village in Katkamsandi, he led a number of attacks against police parties in Chatra and Hazaribagh. Besides, he was also involved in the killing of three villagers he suspected of being police informers.

However, three years ago, he apparently deserted the outfit, fleeing with Rs 60,000 with which he bought a plot in Sikidiri. He had been living there since, running a grocery shop. So effective was he in maintaining a low profile, that many thought he had fled the state two years ago.
