25-yr-old woman succumbs to burns

A 25-year-old woman, who set herself and her four-month-old baby ablaze in Bagbera on Saturday, succumbed to her burns at MGM Medical College and Hospital on Sunday.

Sources said while the child died within two hours of the incident that took place around 7pm, Devanti Murmu, who had sustained 90 per cent burns, was battling for life.

Bagbera sub-inspector N.K. Yadav told The Telegraph that preliminary investigations suggested that it was suicide. A case has been registered on the statement of Sonu Tuddu, the deceased’s husband who works for UCIL.

“I left for work around 2pm on Saturday. We had lunch together and she even came to see me off at the door just like normal days,” police quoted Sonu.

He also claimed that there was no conflict or domestic tiff between the duo.

However, Sonu did confess that Devanti had wanted to go to her parents’ house in Seraikela earlier, but he did not let her. “Our son was not well and she had just come back from her parents’ place a week ago. So I objected. I did not know it would upset her so much that she would kill herself and our baby,” Sonu said.
