Colombo: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain, Virat Kohli India’s Player of the Year, but Yuvraj Singh has become the biggest draw in the current squad.
Yuvraj has always had a big following, but the numbers have swelled even more after his post-cancer comeback this month.
Be it at the grounds here or at the Taj Samudra, there’s a clamour to be photographed with the 2011 World Cup’s Player of the Tournament.
To the extent that he can, Yuvraj obliges. Having experienced the highs and the lows, he’s not getting carried away, though.
Yuvraj has played two T20 Internationals (plus two World Twenty20 practice matches) since his return and his body is feeling “good.”
Asked if he’d ‘warmed up’ after being off big-time cricket for 10 months, Yuvraj told The Telegraph on Thursday: “Yes... I’d say I’m feeling good.”
[On Friday, however, Yuvraj was down with a sore throat.]
The big hits are coming from Yuvraj’s blade and, as important, he’s among the wickets. Now, a big score is awaited.
Big scores are, of course, coming regularly from young Virat Kohli who collected his 14th MoM award on Wednesday.
Asked if he remembered the count, Kohli laughed and said: “No, but all the trophies are at home (in New Delhi)... There’s no separate room for them, but I do know all are there.”
Kohli has himself defended the Virender Sehwag-Gautam Gambhir opening combination, but there are quite a few who feel he should open with Sehwag, with Gambhir at No.3.
Only, that doesn’t look likely as Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher are generally loathe to ‘experiment’.
