- Sunrise club meets Assam Rifles in quarter-finals

Bordoloi trophy

Guwahati, Sept. 21: Sunrise Athletic Club clinched a 2-1 victory to show the exit door to former champions Assam State Electricity Board SC in an all-Guwahati inaugural match of the 61st Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy Tournament at Nehru Stadium here today.

Adopting a defensive strategy from the beginning, Sunrise struck in the last few minutes of first half and were relaxed almost throughout the second session.

African recruit Joseph Camara drew first blood with a header off a Sayao Thankhul free kick in the 42nd minute.

Thankhul got the next opportunity just two minutes later and made no mistake in taking advantage of defensive lapse on part of the powermen to beat their custodian Daoga Brahma and place the ball in the net from inside the goalbox to make the score 2-0.

Into the second session, the powermen went all out on a number of occasions but their efforts did not yield the desired result.

Midfielder Nitu Narzary finally reduced the margin with a free kick in the 89th minute.

Playing in heavy underfoot conditions, the powermen started as favourites playing an attacking game.

They, however, paid the price of lack of experience among the strikers, who squandered at least five scoring opportunities.

The tournament is being held in a knockout format and Sunrise will meet Assam Rifles, Tezpur in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

GTC: Ranjdajied United FC entered the final of the 5th Airtel GTC Challenge Trophy football tournament defeating hosts Gauhati Town Club 2-0 in the first semi-final at Judges Field here this afternoon.
