Husband dies in suicide pact

Unable to find a job and angry with his father for not giving him money to start a business, a 25-year-old youth died while his newly wed wife is battling for life following a suicide pact in Bokaro.

Rupesh Mahto, son of retired Bokaro steel plant employee Baleshwar Mahto and resident of Tupkadih Station Road, about 16km from Bokaro steel city, consumed pesticide with wife Kanchan (23) on Thursday. The two were rushed to Bokaro General Hospital. Rupesh died on Friday morning while Kanchan’s condition is stated to be critical.

According to police, Rupesh had been depressed as he was without a job. His frustration increased after his parents got him married to Kanchan in April this year and he was tensed about providing for his wife. After his father Baleshwar Mahto retired in July with monetary benefits of more than Rs 30 lakh, Rupesh asked a few lakhs to start a business. Rupesh had argued that since his was an arranged marriage, it was his father’s responsibility to help him settle down. But Baleshwar refused to cough up the sum.

“Hurt and angry, Rupesh wanted to teach his parents a lesson and entered into a suicide pact with his wife. Around 1pm on Thursday, the couple locked themselves in their room and consumed pesticide. However, they started vomiting and cried out for help,” said a source.

Hearing the couple’s cries, family members broke into the room to find them lying unconscious on the floor. Police have sent the body for post-mortem.
