Guwahati, Sept. 19: CBI today arrested five persons in connection with the lynching of four Bodo youths at Joypur Namapara in Kokrajhar district on July 20 that had triggered the riots in and around BTAD, claiming 99 lives.
These were the first arrests made by the CBI in connection with the BTAD violence.
According to CBI sources, the accused — Mohammed Hashem Ali, Mohammed Adam Ali Sheikh, Mohammed Hashim Ali Rehman, Mohammed Qurban Ali Sheikh and Mohammed Imran Hussain — were produced in the court of the special judicial magistrate, Assam, here and remanded in CBI custody for five days. “The accused were called for questioning yesterday and they were formally arrested today after they admitted their involvement in the crime during interrogation,” a CBI source said.
According to the source, the CBI had recovered two mobile phones that belonged to the lynched youths, which helped them identify the accused persons.
“The case in which today’s arrests were made was initially registered at Kokrajhar police station and was subsequently re-registered by the CBI on August 10,” the source said.
The recovery of the body of a 19-year-old college student, Gratus Basumatary, from Rani Bazar at Salakati in Kokrajhar district last evening has sparked unease in the area, adds our Kokrajhar correspondent.
