South City International takes on Bidhannagar Municipal School; Chief guest Sushil Bhattacharjee |
Sixteen teams, including Frank Anthony Public School, Albany Hall Public School, Uttar Rabindranagar Vivekananda High School, St. James’ School, South Point High School, Hare School, Hindu School, Tirthapati Institution, Bidhannagar Municipal School and South City International brought their A game to the Bidhannagar Municipal Ground, Salt Lake, for three days from September 14.
The Soccer Seven format, though popular worldwide, is new to Calcutta. Played on a full-sized pitch but with only six outfield players and a goalkeeper, the two halves of 15 minutes each allow unlimited substitutions from a squad of 10. The pace is frenetic, the energy fiery.
The initial matches for the IAM Soccer Sevens took place on Friday and Saturday. The finals were held on Sunday, between St. James’ School and South Point High School. Tirthapati Institution and Uttar Rabindranagar Vivekananda High School played-off for the third position. In the final, St. James beat South Point 5-0!
The event was inaugurated by Suborno Bose, chief mentor, Indismart Group. The chief guest for the occasion was veteran football coach Sushil Bhattacharjee, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame of The Telegraph School Awards earlier this month.
