Behrampore, Sept. 19: A woman in a Murshidabad village was allegedly raped early yesterday by a Trinamul worker whose associates dragged her husband away at gunpoint.
The 20-year-old homemaker and her husband said in their complaint with Behrampore police that Motilal Sheikh and three of his associates barged into their Zamindarpara house at 1am while they were sleeping. “The three aides dragged my husband away at gunpoint to an adjacent club and Motilal raped me,” the complaint said.
Motilal and his aides Nizam Sheikh, Hiru Sheikh and Siku Sheikh — all of whom are Trinamul workers — have been named in the FIR. They are absconding.
The inspector in charge of Behrampore police station, Mohaimenul Haque, said the medical report of the woman would be prepared by the district hospital there. “A medical examination was conducted in the morning. Raids are on across the district to nab the culprits,” he said.
Motilal is the younger brother of Mohanlal Sheikh, a district committee member of the Trinamul Congress, while Nizam is an active Trinamul Chhatra Parishad member.
The woman also alleged that Mohanlal had threatened her this morning that his loyalists would kill her husband if she told anybody or lodged any police complaint regarding the rape.
The homemaker’s husband earns his living by selling brooms.
Nizam, the woman added, had returned to tell her that he would give her a mobile phone if she kept quiet. But if she didn’t, he threatened to rape her again in the night, she said.
“We were so terrified that we did not go to the police initially. But around 8pm yesterday, we gathered courage and lodged the FIR against the four at Behrampore police station,” the rape victim said.
According to the victim’s mother-in-law, Motilal’s mother Katbhanu Bibi had met her this morning and offered her Rs 20,000 if they withdrew the complaint against her younger son.
“When I declined to withdraw the complaint, Katbhanu Bibi raised the offer to Rs 50,000. She also said the police would not be able to do anything against her son,” she said.
The Trinamul district leadership said Motilal had no connection with the party.
District Youth Trinamul president Utpal Pal said though Motilal was the younger brother of Mohanlal Siekh, “he had no connection with the Trinamul Congress ”.
General secretary of the district Congress Ashok Das said Motilal was a known Trinamul worker.
“He is seen in all stree-corner meetings.”
Residents said the group led by Motilal had created a reign of terror in the area.
