Durgapur, Sept. 19: Police today allegedly resorted to a lathicharge to disperse nearly 1,000 Trinamul trade union supporters who had organised a dharna outside the Rs 5,000-crore fertiliser plant coming up in Burdwan’s Panagarh since Saturday demanding job for local youths.
The protesters also prevented workers and trucks carrying construction materials from entering the plant.
The INTTUC workers were sitting on the dharna near the plant gate after the factory’s security in-charge, P.K. Basu, allegedly hired three contract workers from outside the locality on September 12.
The police denied lathicharging the villagers.
Matix sources said the police action came after the management “contacted the Trinamul-led government”.
Around 100 policemen and RAF personnel from police stations in the area and the Burdwan police lines arrived at the spot at 5pm and resorted to a lathicharge after the agitating workers refused to lift the dharna. Two INTTUC leaders were detained.
Indrajit Konar and Gopal Majim, who were leading the agitation, were detained by the police.
