December deadline for highway

Imphal, Sept. 18: Union minister of state in-charge of defence Pallam Raju has assured Manipur that development of National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway) would be completed by December.

Raju was in Imphal for a daylong visit yesterday.“The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has set December 2013 as the deadline for completion of developing the Imphal-Jiribam highway. We are confident that barring two major bridges over the Barak and Makru, the development of road and construction of the smaller bridges would meet the deadline,” he said.

Raju said the completion of the two major roads could go beyond the deadline, but promised that the progress of the work would be accelerated.

On why the road construction gets delayed, the minister blamed it on heavy traffic.

Raju said during the monsoon, the BRO had to discontinue work. “The BRO stockpiles material for construction of the roads and bridges during the rainy season,” he said.

He said the BRO faced the problems of getting materials like iron and cement while constructing roads and bridges in the Northeast.
