New Delhi, Sept. 18 (PTI): The Supreme Court has asked lawyer R.K. Anand, convicted of contempt of court for trying to influence a witness in the Sanjeev Nanda hit-and-run case, to either provide free legal aid to poor litigants or face up to six months in jail.
The court allowed Anand a week’s time to think over the proposal and inform the court.
It upheld Anand’s July 29, 2009, conviction and stripped him of the designation of senior advocate for committing contempt of court by trying to influence the course of justice as a defence counsel in the BMW hit-and-run case. It also asked him why his quantum of punishment should not be enhanced.
On May 3 last year, the apex court expressed dissatisfaction at the tone and tenor of Anand’s apology to the court. “Your affidavit does not say you accept what you did. For you, it is still an imputation.”
