Mumbai, Sept. 18: Ajmal Kasab wrote a mercy petition to the President two days ago in his own hand, a police officer said today.
State inspector-general (prisons) Vinod Lokhande declined to say how long the plea would take to reach the President but confirmed that “the process has started”.
On August 29, the Supreme Court had confirmed the death sentence awarded to the Pakistani gunman for his role in the November 2008 Mumbai attacks. Kasab had initially expressed reluctance to seek clemency.
“Kasab’s plea should be rejected within 24 hours,” Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said.
