Signature Premier Fashion Week Kolkata comes to a close

Soumitra Mondal had promised a “calm and pure” collection and he did keep his word. Bunon, his summer 2012 collection, had lots of gold, white, mehndi green, dull red and dewy pink. Saris, lehngas and kurtas in jamdani and khadi came on the ramp at The Park on Sunday. To drive home the whole “handcrafted” theme, khadi threads skirted the ramp. Soumitra’s models got a fresh look with some pink blush and eyeshadow, a dash of kohl and glossy puckers. The shola gajra on the hair and that barefoot walk down the ramp added to the traditional feel.

Bibi Russell’s Colours of Bengal was all about the versatile khadi and taant. Pants, kurtis, dresses, tunics and saris — the Bangladeshi designer showed how khadi can be contemporary. And cool. And colourful. With the festive season round the corner, the ramp saw a burst of green, orange and yellow. If her simple silhouettes with a touch of the signature gamchha and some crochet had wearable written all over it, her accessories were eye-catching. Those geometric earrings in candy colours and printed-rimmed glasses were just funky. The lilting strains of folk music matched the mood at The Park on Sunday.

Fashion Week Kolkata wrapped up with Manoviraj Khosla’s poolside show at The Park’s Aqua on Monday. Simple sheaths and frocks with some ruffles or pleats, form-fitting pants, shirts and jackets made up the line. He began with menswear, dominated by white. Read white shorts, fitted pants and jackets. Then candy hues made an appearance in check jackets and comfortable linen pants. Solid sheaths in green, purple and the like or fun flowing dresses with funky peacock print made up the colour palette for women. The shade card turned darker as the show progressed, moving on to animal print for women and dark grey for men. The final line was monochrome with blingy black velvet jackets for men, and nude and white dresses for women.
