Student tour

Kokrajhar, Sept. 16: A National Integration Tour comprising 20 students was flagged off from Patharghat army camp in Kokrajhar today. The students, who have been accompanied by two teachers, will meet President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 19. The programme will be organised by the Red Horns division of the army based in Patharghat, Kokrajhar.

MLA dies

Silchar: Kaliranjan Deb, BJP MLA in the Assam Assembly for three consecutive terms from 1991, died at his home on Vidyasagar Road at Silchar on Saturday night. He was 85.

Rescued

Itanagar (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh police rescued a tea garden manager from Lohit district who was abducted by armed militants of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front on September 12. C.N. Pandey, the manager of Sati tea estate at Piyom under Namsai subdivision in Lohit district, was abducted at gunpoint from his home on Wednesday. The police rescued Pandey from a forest near Wagon Pathar under Namsai subdivision around 11.45pm on Saturday night, Lohit superintendent of police S. Kuruvilla said.

Body found

Jorhat: The body of a woman identified as Purnima Barman Das, 24, was found in the Rajmou Barpukhuri area here on Sunday morning. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Bail granted

Karimganj (PTI): Assam minister for border areas development Siddeque Ahmed has been granted bail by Karimganj sub-divisional judicial magistrate in connection with the alleged assault of a person before the last Assembly polls in 2011.
