Imphal, Sept. 16: Two newly-laid deco turf tennis courts were formally inaugurated by NEC secretary Uttam Kumar Sangma at the Imphal District Tennis Association complex yesterday.
The North Eastern Council had sanctioned Rs 3.22 crore for six modern tennis pitches, including four deco turf and two clay courts, at the IWTA complex.
The project took off in 2010. Work on two of the deco turfs is complete and the rest will be complete by this year, according to IWTA officials.
NEC secretary Uttam Kumar Sangma, who was in Imphal to attend a three-day seminar on development of sports in the Northeast, was accompanied by Manipur chief secretary D.S. Poonia during the unveiling of the deco turf.
Elected: Shihan Kirankumar Thangjam has been re-elected the vice-president of All India Karate Do Federation during the annual general body of the federation held in New Delhi on September 12. Kirankumar is also currently heading the Manipur Amateur Karate Do Association as its president.
Hockey squad
Manipur Hockey has selected a 16-member team for the 2nd Hockey India Senior Men’s National Championship 2012 to be held in Bangalore from September 23 to October 2. Goalkeepers: Ph. Bisham, A. Himmat Meetei. Defenders: Kh. Dhananjoy, Kh. Jayanta Kumar, Ch. Dayananda, K. Suresh. Midfielders: Kh. Kothajit, K. Roshan, L. Laiba, Ksh. Wangamba, L. Herojit, N. Ganendrajit.
Forwards: M. Chittaranjan, Romen, K. Hera, N. Abung, M. Amarjit, Th. Kirankumar. In addition, L. Tiken Singh, Ksh. Ibopishak and M. Bimolchandra will accompany as coach, manager and team physiotherapist.
