Police arrested a 50-year-old woman on Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) campus before she could attempt to immolate herself on Sunday around 8.30 in the morning in the wake of high drama.
Munni Devi (50), a former fourth-grade employee at the hospital owned by Bokaro Steel Limited, lost her job as a sweeper in May 2008 when her contractor Sudhir Kumar Singh’s tenure ended. She also did not get her provident fund (PF) as she did not know the proper application procedure.
Since then, she had been threatening to set herself on fire if she did not get both her job and her money back.
A desperate Devi finally wrote to deputy commissioner Sunil Kumar, saying she would immolate herself on September 16 morning.
But when she entered the hospital on Sunday morning, Sector IV thana policemen in the presence of Chas BDO Ranthu Mahto stopped her from making good her threat.
The woman was brought to Sector IV police station. She spoke with BGH administrative officials, including deputy director B.B. Lal who assured her that her PF would be handed over to her soon.
It is not clear if the woman’s request for a job would be entertained by the steel major. But BSL chief of communications Sanjay Tewary said all measures would be taken to resolve the dispute with Devi.
Devi also asked BDO Mahto to give her son Sunil a job. But the BSL administration told her that he already held a job as a fourth-grade employee with another contractor engaged by the steel major.
