An immediate solution to traffic mayhem in the state capital may not be in sight, but administrative measures, coupled with sensitisation of transport operators and residents, can help address the problem.
The suggestion came at a meeting between businessmen and residents of Lalpur area and C.S. Prasad, superintendent of police (traffic), Ranchi, on Sunday.
The meeting was convened by Lalpur Byaosayee Samiti, a body of local businessmen. Besides members of the samiti, local residents and some office-bearers of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI) were also present at the meeting.
The residents complained that while the 6km stretch from Kantatoli Chowk to Ratu Road witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic everyday, a choked Circular Road between Dangatoli Chowk and Kutchery Chowk gave them a hard time.
“Autos are an important mode of transport and people cannot do without them. But stopping illegal vehicles from plying and putting a check on random parking will surely help,” Prasad said after lending an ear to the residents.
On heavy vehicles entering no-entry zones, Prasad said school buses had to be allowed for the sake of children. “If any other heavy vehicle is seen, please inform me,” he told the residents.
The traffic SP also pointed out that there were many lanes connected to Circular Road, some of which were inter-linked. “If residents are sensitised we can find out ways to use these roads,” he said, agreeing to conduct a joint inspection.
“We are facing shortage of personnel — only 80 against the sanctioned strength of 520. Hence, our hands are tied and we can’t post a constable at every lane. Residents have to cooperate and help us,” Prasad added.
It is always better to avoid confrontation and find a solution to any problem through discussion and we are doing just that, said Ranjit Tibrewal, FJCCI president and a resident of the area.
