Retail chain worker in Durgapur rape net

Durgapur, Sept. 16: A retail chain worker in Durgapur was arrested last night in connection with the alleged rape of a diagnostic centre co-owner in the steel town on September 9.

Bapi Bauri alias Chotu was picked up from Suhatta Mall in City Centre after the 11 arrested youths spilled out his name during interrogation, police said.

“We learnt about Bapi while interrogating the youths. Policemen in plain clothes waited for him near the shopping mall. He was arrested soon after he came out of the departmental store where he worked as a cleaner,” said Dibyendu Das, the officer in charge of Durgapur police station.

Bapi is resident of Piala locality where the woman was allegedly raped on September 9.

A police officer said the medical report of the woman was yet to reach them.

A gynaecologist at Durgapur subdivisional hospital, however, said the injury marks on the woman’s hands and legs and those on her private parts suggested she was sexually assaulted. “It could be that she was raped.”

The police said they were looking for four more youths, also residents of the Piala area, in connection with the case.

Eleven youths — eight of them workers of a printing press — have been arrested. Rajesh Kora, who the police said was the main accused, is also in judicial custody.

The woman had in the identification parade on Friday apparently failed to recognise any of the arrested youths, telling the judicial magistrate she did not remember their faces.

“She told the judicial magistrate on Friday that it was pitch dark on the night of September 9 and she could see the faces of the youths,” a source said.

Rajesh, the main accused, had told the police that he along with his two colleagues had caught the woman in Piala in his bike headlight and dialled his friends who were on their way home from work.

The trio then caught the woman, pinned her to the ground and flung away the pair of jeans she was wearing when the others arrived at the spot and held her bank-official husband.

The 10 arrests of the youths on September 11 are the highest in Bengal in a rape case in recent years.
