Trader robbed, killed

Nalbari, Sept. 14: A businessman was robbed of Rs 20 lakh and gunned down by three persons, including a surrendered Ulfa rebel and a Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan, in broad daylight here today.

Police, however, promptly arrested two of the killers, though the third escaped.

The police said the trio confronted businessman Ashish Maskara, 29, in his car when he came to Hari Mandir Chowk here to deposit the money at the SBI branch. The youths asked Maskara to hand over the money and then shot him inside the car when he refused. The trio, who had come on two motorcycles, then grabbed the money and fled.

Maskara was moved to Swahid Mukunda Kakati civil hospital where he died of his injuries.

Moving swiftly, a team from Nalbari police station, led by officer-in-charge S. Suklavaidya, arrested two of the killers from Paikarkuchi in Nalbari district.

Nalbari SP Abu Suphiyan said the arrested duo were Chandan Kalita and Kamaljit Singh Siddhu. “Kalita is a surrendered Ulfa cadre, while Siddhu is an RPF jawan.”

He said the police had got the name of the third culprit too. “Investigation is on, and we will arrest him as soon as possible.” The police recovered Rs 7.53 lakh from the duo.

Nalbari deputy commissioner Lalit Gogoi, inspector-general of police (central-western range) G.P. Singh and Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah visited the scene of the crime this evening.

Local residents laid siege to the police station and blockaded roads, while several local organisations, including the Nalbari Chamber of Commerce, called a 12-hour Nalbari bandh tomorrow in protest against the police’s failure to prevent such crimes.
