Maiden title for NFR in tourney

GSA soccer

Guwahati, Sept. 14: NF Railway SC claimed their maiden title in the Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Sports Association Super Division Football League, defeating strong contenders Dynamo Club by a solitary goal in the last match of the championship leg at Nehru Stadium here today.

With today’s win, the railmen tallied 21 points from 10 matches, of which they won seven and lost three.

Today’s defeat, however, not only robbed Dynamo of the title, they also slid down the tally to the third place as Sunrise Club, who were also on 16 points, scaled up the tally to the runners-up position with better goal aggregate.

The first session of the match was barren despite both sides getting scoring opportunities. Shashanka Chanda fired in the all-important goal for NF Railway in the 83rd minute with a free kick that went over the human wall straight into the net.

Tomorrow, Assam Police Blues will lock horns with Gauhati Town Club and a draw for the latter will be enough for their survival in the elite league.

The policemen, languishing at the bottom of the tally with only seven points, will have to win the match for their survival and the relegation of GTC who are on nine points.

Rising Stars: Shillong boys Russel Lyngdoh and Remitri Thama have been named among the 12 young footballers selected to train at Manchester United Soccer Schools in November under the Airtel Rising Stars programme.

Wushu body: Murali Dhar Chowdhury and Ranjit Boro were re-elected president and secretary respectively of the Wushu Association of Assam for the next four years in its general meeting held on Tuesday.
